Introduction to Counseling and Psychotherapy

Counseling and psychotherapy are terms used synonymously, in most cases, for listening-and-talking based methods of addressing psychological and psychosomatic problems and changes. These might include deep and prolonged human suffering, situational dilemmas, crises and developmental needs, and aspirations towards the realization of human potential. In contrast to the traditional medical model, psychological therapies work largely without medications and or physical interventions. Mental health therapies take into account other aspects of the person and are not limited to mental health but also consider spiritual, philosophical, social, and other aspects of living in the world.

Professional forms of psychotherapy and counseling are based on formal training which encompasses pertinent psychological theory, clinical skill development, personal development and therapy, along with adequate and appropriate supervision. These are a few of the basics of what a counseling psychological therapist will have as a background in working with someone. There are many schools of therapeutic thought and practice. Ask your clinician what theoretical school she or he works from and you will spark a lively discussion. It is good great question to ask.
